For over 20 years, The Graphic Marketing Group, Inc. has been the center of Larry’s career focus. The business was dedicated to the planning and production of quality photography and printed marketing materials, primarily for the Food & Beverage industry, working with local and regional companies including: Tri Valley Growers/S&W Fine Foods, Nancy’s Specialty Foods, Liberty Gold Fruit Company, Gallo Salame, Kagome USA, Facciola Meats, and Round Table Pizza. Over the years Graphic Marketing has also worked for many high tech, corporate and service businesses including DHL Airways and VISA.
As of July 1998, Larry structured a new business division A la Carte Digital Studios to take advantage of his two primary interests in life, photography and food. Incorporating the investment in a high-resolution scanning camera back for the studio and the digital retouching and production services to compliment the photographic assignments.
For Larry, A la Carte Digital Studios is the culmination of over 40 years of experience in the disciplines of photography, marketing and sales. He began his career in 1964, while still in high school, as a photographer in photojournalism and portraiture. For nine years, he worked as production manager and photographer in advertising with Bill Gale Photography in Minneapolis, working on many national food accounts including: Pillsbury, Green Giant, Dairy Queen, International Multifoods and Land O’Lakes.
Larry studied advertising and journalism in college and has worked as a sales promotion director, a marketing director and an ad agency account executive. In 1981, he started working as an artist and photographer’s rep in the San Francisco Bay Area. Responding to the needs of his clients, he continued to expand available services to create the current business format. The Graphic Marketing Group, Inc., was a full service photographic and graphic production studio offering complete project management, photography and print production services. The change to A la Carte Digital Studios allowed more time to build an expertise in the latest digital imaging technology. “While working with Bill Gale, I learned that perfection is the only acceptable goal in advertising and in this quest, nothing is impossible. This ideal has guided my business from the very beginning and we will continue to strive to do a common thing uncommonly well”.
Larry has consistently shared his experience in seminars, conventions and industry associations, and has received the Photographic Craftsman degree awarded by the Professional Photographers of America for his outstanding teaching and contributions within the industry. In June 2000, he achieved the status of Certified Professional Photographer and in 2002 was awarded the degree of Master of Photography from the PP of A. He has recently completed a series of seminars and workshops relating to digital food photography. The information is structured in a modular format to present programs for both the photographic and food industry.
A member of the Professional Photographers of America for 38 years, Larry is also a member of the San Francisco Professional Food Society and the International Association of Culinary Professionals. He is continuing his experimentation and study of cooking and food styling techniques, as well as expanding his experience in digital technology and Photoshop skills.
From June 1999 through October 2003, Larry worked as Marketing Director for Better Light, Inc., one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-end digital camera systems. In addition to managing all marketing, training, advertising and public relations activities for Better Light, Larry continued to do limited client work “to keep a foot in reality” and also did much of the testing and example photos with the digital scanning back.
In November of 2003, Larry reopened his studio in the San Francisco Peninsula and will rebuild the client base of A la Carte Digital Studios, offering food, product and location photography, plus art repro and digital production services.
In addition to the commercial photography business, the studio will offer a unique transformation/makeover portrait service under the dba of Persona ImageMakers. Working with his new partner, Robin Howland, a talented hair/makeup and fashion stylist, they will offer portraiture that is inspired by the classic pinup illustrators; the glamour photographers of Hollywood's golden era; and the innovative techniques and styles of today's fashion and beauty photographers.
The most recent addition to The Graphic Marketing Group family is Archetype Digital Imaging Alliance, an organization of specialists in art reproduction and high-resolution digital capture business. Archetype will provide digital capture services, consulting, training and equipment sales to museums, libraries, galleries and historial societies. The varied talents of the alliance members gives Archetype the advantage of handling large and technically complex projects.
